Formula and assumptions
Tool · Tokenize Unicode words, count Unicode code points and split paragraphs at blank lines. Average word length is total word characters divided by words. Reading and speaking seconds are words × 60 ÷ speed.
Characters are Unicode code points. Words use Unicode letters and numbers. Sentence endings and blank-line paragraph breaks are approximations.

Words = 2.00 · Characters with spaces = 12.00 · Characters without spaces = 11.00 · Sentences = 1.00 · Paragraphs = 1.00 · Average word length = 5.00 · Estimated reading time = 0.60 seconds · Estimated speaking time = 0.92 seconds.
These example values are illustrative.
Interpreting the result
For an editorial limit, confirm whether the publisher counts hyphenated terms, punctuation or spaces differently. Use paragraph and sentence totals to inspect structure as well as length.

What happens to hyphenated terms?
A word containing an internal hyphen or apostrophe is treated as one token. Editors can use different counting rules.
