UTM Link Builder: Enter a destination URL and campaign values to generate a tagged link containing UTM parameters. Consistent naming helps analytics group traffic correctly; values are case-sensitive and should never contain personal or sensitive information.
UTM Link Builder
Build a campaign link while retaining unrelated query parameters and fragments.
Formula and assumptions
Tool · Parse the HTTP(S) URL, remove existing campaign keys case-insensitively, append the supplied encoded tags and preserve the original fragment.
Use a public HTTP or HTTPS address. Existing campaign fields are replaced. Avoid personal information in campaign labels.

What this calculator tells you
UTM parameters are query-string values added to a destination URL so analytics systems can identify campaign source, medium, name and optional details. The parameters support reporting but do not create tracking unless the destination analytics setup records them.
- Tag email, social, partner or offline campaign links.
- Standardize source and medium naming across a team.
- Distinguish creative or placement variants with optional parameters.
For a decision-ready record, save the input definitions, reporting period, currency, source system and calculation date with the result. This makes the UTM Link Builder output reproducible and prevents a later reader from comparing figures that were produced from different scopes or assumptions.
How to use the UTM Link Builder
- Enter the final canonical destination URL, including HTTPS.
- Add consistent lowercase source, medium and campaign values.
- Use optional content, term, ID or source-platform values only when they support a reporting question.
- Generate the URL, test the destination and confirm values appear correctly in analytics reporting.
Formula and variables
Destination URL + ?utm_source=value&utm_medium=value&utm_campaign=valueExisting query parameters require an ampersand rather than another question mark. Values must be URL-encoded, are case-sensitive and can be visible to users and third parties.
- utm_source
- Referrer or platform, such as newsletter, google or partner name.
- utm_medium
- Marketing medium, such as email, cpc, social or referral.
- utm_campaign
- Consistent campaign name used for grouping and reporting.
Worked examples
Email newsletter
A campaign might use utm_source=newsletter, utm_medium=email and utm_campaign=november_update. Keep the convention consistent across every link.
Paid social creative
Use source for the platform, medium for paid_social or the team's approved value, campaign for the initiative and content for the creative variation.
Existing query string
If the destination already contains ?product=123, append UTM values with &utm_source= rather than starting a second query string.
How to interpret the result
The generated URL is correct only if the naming convention is correct. “Facebook”, “facebook” and “fb” can create separate rows, so maintain a shared taxonomy.
UTM parameters should not be used on internal navigation because they can overwrite session acquisition information. They are intended for links that bring users from an external campaign.
Practical tips
- Use lowercase values and a documented naming standard.
- Test the final redirect so parameters are not lost.
- Avoid spaces by using a consistent separator.
- Never place names, emails or sensitive data in UTM values.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using UTMs on internal site links.
- Changing capitalization or spelling across teams.
- Allowing redirects to drop campaign parameters.
Assumptions and limitations
- Analytics must be installed and configured to record campaign data.
- Ad blockers and consent choices can reduce measurement.
- Parameters are visible in the URL and logs.
- Cross-domain and redirect configurations can affect attribution.
Treat the result as a planning estimate. Confirm important business, tax, platform or contractual decisions against your own records and the latest applicable terms.

Frequently asked questions
Which UTM parameters are required?
For practical reporting, use at least source, medium and campaign. Google also documents optional campaign ID, term, content and source platform.
Are UTM values case-sensitive?
Yes. Different capitalization can create separate reporting values.
Should internal links use UTM parameters?
No. Internal UTMs can overwrite acquisition information and fragment reporting.
Can UTM parameters contain personal data?
They should not. URLs can be stored and shared, so never put names, emails or sensitive identifiers in them.
Why did my parameters disappear?
A redirect or URL-handling rule may have removed the query string. Test the final destination and redirect chain.
